Becoming the Person God Is Shaping Me to Be

"Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." — 1 Peter 3:4

There was a time when I measured my worth by everything I could accomplish.

Being productive. Being needed. Being successful. Being enough for everyone around me.

I believed those things defined who I was.

But God has been slowly teaching me something different.

He isn't nearly as concerned with what I accomplish as He is with who I'm becoming.

That's both freeing and challenging.

Because becoming more like Christ isn't something we achieve through effort alone.

It's something the Holy Spirit cultivates as we surrender.

Jesus said,

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." (Matthew 5:8)

I've realized that purity of heart isn't about pretending to be perfect.

It's about allowing God to continually search my heart.

To expose pride. Selfish ambition. Bitterness. Fear. Control.

And then gently replace them with His character.

Paul paints that picture beautifully in Colossians:

"Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." (Colossians 3:12)

Those qualities don't usually grow overnight.

They're formed in ordinary days.

In difficult conversations.

In disappointments.

In waiting.

In forgiveness.

In choosing grace when it would be easier to react.

Sometimes I wonder if I've spent too much of my life asking God,

"What do You want me to do?"

When perhaps a better question is,

"Lord...who are You shaping me to become?"

Because eventually our character becomes our greatest testimony.

Long after people forget what we accomplished...

They'll remember how we loved.

How we forgave.

How we treated people.

Whether our lives reflected Jesus.

I'm realizing that this season of my life isn't simply about discovering what's next.

It's about allowing God to reshape my heart before He reshapes my circumstances.

And maybe that's His invitation to all of us.

Not to strive harder.

Not to become someone impressive.

But to become someone who looks a little more like Jesus every single day.

Because the most beautiful life isn't the most successful one.

It's the one that reflects Christ.

Reflection

Instead of asking, "God, what do You want me to do?"

Try asking,

"Lord, who are You inviting me to become?"

He may change your heart before He changes your circumstances.
